We are seeking an experienced Head Orthoptist to lead and develop a team of Orthoptists while partnering closely with ophthalmologists to drive clinical excellence, operational efficiency, and exceptional patient outcomes.

The Role
As Head Orthoptist, you will combine hands-on clinical responsibilities with leadership and operational oversight, acting as a key link between the Orthoptist team, specialists and practice leadership.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading, mentoring and developing a team of 3-4 Orthoptists
- Supporting the onboarding, training and professional growth of new team members
- Creating, reviewing and implementing clinical policies and procedures
- Driving consistency, quality and best-practice standards across the clinic
- Working closely with ophthalmologists to support exceptional patient outcomes
- Managing clinic flow and ensuring efficient day-to-day operations
- Providing leadership, guidance and support within a busy clinical environment
- Conducting comprehensive patient assessments and consultations
- Performing and overseeing ophthalmic diagnostic testing
- Supporting pre-operative and post-operative patient care
- Assisting with clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives and compliance requirements
- Building strong relationships across the wider multidisciplinary team
- Identifying opportunities to improve workflows, patient experience and team performance
About You
We're looking for a natural leader who is calm under pressure, empathetic with their team and patients, yet confident enough to provide clear direction and uphold standards when required.
You'll bring:
- Qualification as an Orthoptist with current Australian registration
- Significant experience within an ophthalmology setting
- Previous leadership, mentoring or senior clinical experience
- A calm, empathetic and professional leadership style
- The confidence to make decisions and have difficult conversations when required
- Strong relationship-building skills and the ability to work collaboratively with specialists and support teams
- A passion for coaching, developing and supporting others
- Excellent organisational, communication and stakeholder management skills
- Experience developing or working within policies, procedures and clinical governance frameworks
- A proactive approach with the ability to balance clinical and operational responsibilities
